And, yet, here it sits, teeming life and prosperity - the biggest little major league sports town in America. Hell, that summer of '84, Glory was like to a ghost town. But, what you need to know, too, is this town, likely as not, would’ve gone under without him. ![]() You already know I’d have never got Mow Foes started without him. After all, if you hear a fellow died in prison - a convicted felon - you'll likely write him off as chaff.īut, I tell you what - there was no little hero to Vern Klein, even guilty as he was. See, there's plenty of folks - some of 'em, League officials and trustees - who wince at putting his name on a MFUSA wall, whether inside or out - and who only tolerate that prospect out of respect for me. But, since he’s been talked on quite a little lately - what with his write-in nomination for the Colonnade of Blades and the new Vern Klein Visitor Complex all of a sudden not bein' named for him - well, I just thought fans ought to know there was a lot of good to the man. Thing is, my Uncle Vern was square in the middle of it.Ĭourse he’s been gone a good while. Story's ‘bout scoundrels, too - what came to town and all but ruined us. And, there’s a story needs tellin’ - ‘bout folks steppin’ up for others and payin’ a price for it, some of ‘em. And, I got busy with a different bed of lettuce - a kind of history is what - local, for sure, and personal.
