Ver sacrum art of the vienna secession3/18/2023 ![]() ![]() I’d like to say it’s the Austrian equivalent of England‘s The Studio, that is correct as far as time period and art quality, but Ver Sacram takes reproduction techniques and quality to an entirely new level of excellence. Never before have we seen a book of this quality and with this quantity of reproductions from this magazine. Writers including Rainer Maria Rilke, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Maurice Maeterlinck, Knut Hamsun, Otto Julius Bierbaum, Richard Dehmel, Ricarda Huch, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer and Arno Holz were published in its pages.įrom Scotland even Charles Rennie MacIntosh and the MacDonalds became contributors, leaders in their own country’s art nouveau movement. ![]() Some of these artists were architects, others illustrators, others designers, and they created this magazine to reflect art at its highest level, with each page highly designed with vignettes, borders, illustrated drop caps (initial letters)…each aspect of the magazine a work of art, from cover to prose works to poetry to full page illustrations. Each issue addressed a different theme, and they even changed paper quality and printers to keep the innovation coming along. Ver Sacrum (meaning “Sacred Spring” in Latin) was conceived by this all-star list of young, rebellious, wildly creative artists. This collects all 120 regular issue covers-plus special, limited-edition covers-along with a selection of the very finest and most innovative interior artworks. With all-original artwork by Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Klimt, Schiele and others, the avante garde Austrian magazine Ver Sacrum set the standard for art nouveau imagery and fine magazine design. This Vienna Secession showpiece was published from 1898 to 1903, collecting 471 original drawings made specifically for the magazine, 55 lithographs and copper engravings and 216 block prints.
